Here’s an interview well worth watching with Tim Traverse-Healy, a founding father of the public relations profession in Britain. He’s asked how he got into PR, and explains that while on service during the Second World War his ship received supplies including boiled sweets and some paperback books.
One book, from a group of New York Christians, talked about jobs you could choose if you wanted to be on the side of angels and against sin. Public relations – which is often defined as seeking to establish and maintain goodwill and mutual understanding between an organisation and its publics – was a career the book recommended. And rightly so.
