Congratulations to the CIPR Excellence winners

Last week we joined over 550 PR professionals for the Chartered Institute of Public Relations’ Excellence Awards.

It’s been three years since the awards have been held in person, and it was wonderful to see Comms pros recognised.

I had the pleasure of judging the CIPR Excellence awards again this year and as ever, was impressed by the creativity and skill on display.

Three-quarters of #TeamTeal went to the awards to cheer on those who had been shortlisted. I’m pictured with my PA Louise Mackenney and Communication Consultant Dan Holden, who is also the Chair of CIPR Inside, the sector group for internal communicators.

We enjoyed catching up with Comms friends including Asif Choudry from #CommsHero (pictured).

I judged the Institute of Internal Communication (IoIC) Awards yesterday and we’re hoping to all attend those awards later in the year. If you’re thinking of entering awards, do check out our previous blog posts: Five top tips from an awards judge, Insider tips from an awards judge and How to enter comms awards.

In short, make sure your objectives are robust and you align your measurement against them. Outcomes, not outputs. Always.

Let’s turn back to the awards ceremony…

CIPR Excellence Awards 2022

The awards had 32 categories and took place at The Artillery Garden at the HAC. They were hosted by BBC presenter Jason Mohammad, who Louise had a great chat with after the presentations.

Introducing the Awards was BEIS Minister Lee Rowley MP from the Department of Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy (BEIS) who spoke of the UK PR industry as leading the world and as a “trusted and valued sector”.

MHP Mischief was the biggest winner on the night picking up three awards, including ‘Best Social Purpose Campaign’ and ‘Best Integrated Campaign’ for their #LONGLIVETHEPRINCE campaign with the Kiyan Prince Foundation. They also won ‘Best Consumer Relations Campaign’. Tin Man came away with two awards for ‘Best Use of Media Relations’ Award for their work with Guide Dogs for the Blind and ‘Best Transport or Automotive Campaign’ for their campaign with LNER.
After a couple of years away it was a fantastic experience to bring everyone together for a night of well-deserved celebrations. When a light is shone on our industry, as it was last night, it really demonstrates the breadth of talent, creativity, and passion that flows throughout it. Ours is work that makes a difference for our organisations, our clients, and the public and it is what makes PR one of the most rewarding industries to work in. I want to wish everyone that was shortlisted and those that came away with an Award many congratulations – CIPR President Rachel Roberts Chart.PR, MCIPR.

Fareham Borough Council won the Award for ‘Best Public Sector Campaign’, Tommy’s went home with the ‘Best Not-For-Profit’ Award, and Cowshed won ‘Best Public Affairs Campaign’.

The ‘Best In-House PR Team of the Year’ Award went to English Heritage and Smarts took home the ‘Best PR Consultancy of the Year’ Award. The ‘Best New PR Consultancy of the Year’ Award went to Hard Numbers with Words + Pixels awarded ‘Small PR Consultancy of the Year’ Award. Michael Lowdon MCIPR won the ‘Young Communicator of the Year’ Award.
