Is it possible to achieve a work/life balance in PR – Share your thoughts

By Oliver Tunmore,

Returning to Bournemouth University to complete my final year of studies in September, I’m coming back with a fresh mind set.

A new outlook on the working world that I’m studying to become a part of. My time at Magenta Associates, a leading PR agency for the built environment, showed me the crucially important balance of working hard, playing hard, and knowing when to switch off. PR as an industry is hard work, there’s no doubt about that – and there’s no hotter topic at the moment than the importance of work/life balance.

Throughout my time on placement, I was able to proudly declare whenever asked, “I study at Bournemouth Uni, doing media production.” And not once did those words ever land to an unimpressed reaction. Thankfully, I’ll soon be able to call myself a graduate of one of the best media schools in the country, and I’m incredibly proud to do so.

But - In order to do that – I must complete eight more months of studying, practicing, editing, writing, researching – the list goes on, and on. And one of said units requires me to devise a thesis of my own to attempt to answer.

My title, which came to me one day when reflecting on my 15 months in the public relations sector, aims to dissect an incredibly topical conversation at present. “Is it possible to achieve a successful work/life balance in the PR industry?” is my working title at present – and in order to even attempt to answer the question, I am going to need to speak to industry professionals for their tips, advice and opinions.

Thankfully, throughout placement, I was able to make fantastic contact in various different fields. Now, I’m keen to speak to even more individuals from whole arrays of experiences and sectors within PR, to really pull apart the conversation.

I would like to speak to large international conglomerates, SME boutique agencies, and just about everything and everyone in between.

I know in my head how I imagine answering this question from my experience - but I am keen to hear from as many people as possible about their opinions too. Whether it divides my thinking entirely, or concludes my thoughts coherently, I want to ensure the piece is as accurate as possible, and a true reflection of the state of the industry and the hard working, passionate professionals within it as possible.
