Positive purpose-led communications at Influence Live

Successful communications teams make the most of the strengths their organisations already possess.

That was my key take away from two fascinating talks at Influence Live.

Jules Chappell, managing director of London & Partners, the mayor’s official promotional company for the capital, explained how her team has emphasised the uniqueness of London as a city – one that is home to many ecosystems. From cultural, business, technology and innovation, London is recognised as a world leader in in so many areas – something which not many cities can claim.

This has been vital in London & Company’s efforts to promote the capital as a place to invest and do business since the EU referendum in 2016.

Chappell outlined how her team had used this unique environment to demonstrate London’s flexibility and the diversity of its offering – all while being extra nice to cities which might have sought to take advantage of the uncertainty to tempt businesses away from London – stressing co-operation and mutual benefit.

There was a similar lesson to be learned from Vodafone’s success in developing purpose-led communications. To align their campaigns with the telecoms giant’s values.

Delivered by Sarah Kemp, Vodafone’s senior global communications manager and Miki Haines-Sanger, managing director of Golden Goose PR, their agency support, the audience was shown how, by understanding that technology is inherently capable of driving change that is beyond the business world.

There were many fantastic examples from both presentations which made it clear how important it is that comms does not silo itself off and understands business aims and USPs.

While still absorbing such an interesting hour, delegates attended one of three breakout sessions.

The Press Association had some amazing statistics during their session – their journalists receive more than 700 press releases per day! PA’s head of planning, Wesley Johnson, had some terrific advice on getting your news noticed and planning your strategy for 2020.

Leading PR recruitment agency Reuben Sinclair were on hand to show how, despite uncertainly and limited talent pools, organisations can still find the right candidate to advance their business – through diverse recruitment and modern working practices.

And, finally, it wouldn’t be an Influence event without Influencers. Vuelio brought with them three amazingly talented influencers – fitness and lifestyle Instagrammer Jade Joselyn, athlete and YouTube star Gabriel Sey and the gluten free food blogger Becky Excell – each of whom led mini sessions on collaboration between public relations and influencers.

It was a terrific day – you can check out some more pictures from the day and tweets about the sessions at #InfluenceLive.

Watch out for news on the next Influence Live, which will be in October.
