Acts of kindness: Raising awareness of benevolence

The CIPR benevolent fund, iprovision, has thrown its weight behind a new PR campaign aimed at raising awareness of the impact grant-making charities have on society.

One Day Changes Lives is a new national awareness day on October 16, and created by the Association of Charitable Organisations (ACO) – the umbrella body uniting charities that provide support to individuals.

The campaign aims to raise the profile of ACO’s different charity members, of which iprovision is only one of more than a hundred, and highlight their services so more people can benefit from their support.

iprovision chair Tony Bradley said: “This is an important initiative for the charity sector and will challenge public misconceptions of benevolent funds.  Many benevolent funds, such as our own, have been operating for decades if not centuries but are often not on the radar of people who could really use their help.

“The campaign will test the commonly-held belief that benevolent funds only provide financial support, when in reality there are many other services they provide to significantly improve the lives of their beneficiaries. This might include signposting them to mental health support – a big issue in our own profession – trusted sources of financial and legal advice or mentoring programmes that can help practitioners get back into work.

“It will also show the overall impact ACO members have as a collective. While an individual act of benevolence may seem small, such as providing a grant for a new central heating boiler or a smart outfit for a job interview, this can have a huge impact on a beneficiary’s life.”

One Day Changes Lives hopes to ensure as many people as possible are aware of where they can get support, and campaign organisers are encouraging anyone who has been helped by its member charities, to take part in the campaign and share examples of support on social media on the day using the hashtag #OneDayChangesLives.

Dominic Fox, Chief Executive of the ACO, added: “It is important that we highlight the organisations providing ongoing support for its beneficiaries and the help they can give to people who really need it.

“On an individual basis, charities may not attract attention beyond the immediate parties involved. Taken together, though, they have a real societal impact.”
