Thank Goodness we have Maggie's, they deserve all the PR they can get

By James Knight.

Like many of CIPR members I believe in helping charities, giving something back, we all have our reasons why.

A charity I believe in is Maggie's Charity for Cancer and I have written articles for their relatively new outstanding development at Barts in the City of London before.

How have they coped with PR and working ahead in the changing world we live in? They have a loyal group of patrons who give time, expertise and obviously money for good or bad times.

One of the secrets is being able to hold onto your people, which has not been easy. I see what a wonderful job they do, as a family I have been touched like many by cancer.

The pandemic has created a difficult environment for organisations like Maggie’s to keep the public’s attention. Therefore, they come up with new ideas to try and attract PR from other sources. Nationally they have PR support which has also helped that by individual centres coming up with ideas.

Maggie's Barts are really planning for the future, Wing Walking, Night Hikes and Cycle Events as well as conventional PR campaigns to raise awareness and funds, makes them very innovative and very forward thinking. Because of their innovative ideas they attract the publicity they deserve for the work they do.

They work alongside the NHS and give people with cancer a breathing space away from hospitals, staff are specialised and they help with anything from money worries to treatment side which can affect patients and build confidence and resilience.

Their buildings are striking where famous architects like Richard Rogers have been involved in architecture that makes you relax, I love the atmosphere of the building at Barts with a Scandinavian feel about it using light wood and open spaces.

I would like to thank Maggie's with help with this blog.
