THE JOINING FORCES OF ART AND MEDICINE: ANOTHER DIMENSION OF PR
Written by James Knight
In Britain and America from Cedars Sinai Hospital, Los Angeles to Chelsea Westminster Hospital, art plays an important part in healthcare recovery.
Los Angeles is unique in so many ways, from the movies and lifestyle and a lot more, when you work there in PR and Journalism, it's like opening a Jack-in-a-box of PR stories that jump out at you.
Living and working in LA for several years I found PR and stories appear around every corner. Namely, The Beverly Hills Hotel, which is a part of the Dorchester Group and was one of my favourite places for business meetings, one lunchtime comes to mind, I was there to meet a good friend in the music business and one of the LA icons of music globally. We started talking about stories, a story which to mind was Frederick Wiseman and his wife Monica Wiseman, well-known business entrepreneurs, through a medical condition transformed the world of art and medicine.
Frederick Wiseman was rushed to the Cedars Sinai Hospital in LA going into a coma after incurring a head injury, he was well-known for his art collection, while he was in hospital Monica Wiseman took one of his favourite paintings to his ward, finally, he came out of his coma, he said the painting then helped his recovery.
The painting concerned was painted by Andy Warhol. today, Cedars Sinai is not only an international well-known medical hospital it is a world gallery with over 4,000 paintings and sculptures. He contacted his friends and business colleagues, they donated paintings to the hospital, you can look around the hospital in the corridors of the hospital, it is an art gallery in all senses.
It has opened the world to how art can help patients, plus great PR.
Artists like Will de Koning, Frank Stella, Pablo Picasso and Roy License are all on show and donated.
In Britain there are hospitals also using art, Chelsea and Westminster Hospital has 2,000 pieces, plus they run art classes to help patients recover after medical treatment.
The Arts Club of Chelsea host a revolving exhibition, the oldest piece being The Resurrection by Paulo Veronese 1580, which is a prize exhibit.
The famous Royal North Orthopaedic Hospital in Stanmore, in their new block, have great birds murals painted on the walls of corridors adapted from The Lost World famous book by Robert McFarlane and Jackie Morris, they bring the walls to life, brilliant for children.
Three examples of how art can link with medicine, all three hospitals deserve all the positive PR and educate the public, patients and staff.
Two websites Cedars Sinai go online for more information from the hospital website.
