'My career highlight? Launching the search for Scotland’s Ambassadog'

Erin Hickey is a CIPR Scotland member based in Edinburgh. In this spotlight, we hear about her role boosting tourism in Scotland and what she's learnt during her career

Name: Erin Hickey
Job title and company: PR manager, VisitScotland
Location: Edinburgh
Time in PR: 17 years

What does your current role involve?

My role largely involves strategic media relations aimed at showcasing Scotland as a holiday destination and driving visits from people in the UK, both in the high and low seasons.

What do you love most about working in public relations?

The variety and the challenges; from planning events and trips to be being able to write creatively. I love being asked to solve problems and organise things.  I’ve generally enjoyed these activities my whole life so it has made sense for me to work in PR!

What's been the highlight of your career so far?

Launching the search for Scotland’s Ambassadog, or canine ambassador, in 2016 which generated significant global coverage. It was the most fun and challenging project and so rewarding. I think about it all the time as I learned so much from it.

How long have you been a member and what made you join?

I joined in 2017 not long after completing my CIPR diploma in public relations. It was mostly due to completing my qualification that I was inspired to join as I learned there was this whole network of fellow PR professionals and resources that would allow me to build upon my skills and knowledge and develop my career.

How does the CIPR support your career?

I think being part of the CIPR community keeps me motivated and committed to working to the highest standards. It also provides opportunities and training enabling me to get the best out of my career, as well as elevating the communications profession within my organisation and society as a whole.

Best piece of career advice you’ve been given?

You learn more from what you do wrong than what you do right.  I think that’s just generally true in life, too. Also: trust your instincts.
