‘I’ve benefited enormously from volunteering on my local CIPR committee’
We’re turning the spotlight on Rose Ling, an active CIPR member whose passion for giving back to the profession has propelled her to become the CIPR East Anglia Group co-chair
Job title and company: Fundraising and marketing coordinator for The Mix Stowmarket
Location: Stowmarket, Suffolk
Time in PR: 10 years
What does your current role involve?
I have worked in comms in general for 10 years, but PR particularly for only four to five years. My current role is very different to roles I’ve had in the past; as I now work for a local youth work charity and my job is of two parts, fundraising and marketing. It is a lot more marketing than it is PR, and fundraising is a top priority. I am also co-chair of the CIPR East Anglia committee.
What do you love most about working in public relations?
What I love about comms is how varied the role is. In all my positions over the years it’s been varied depending on if I’m working in-house or agency, because clients are always varied. Now working as the sole marketing bod for a local youth work charity the days are always different.
One day I could be photographing cakes that the cafés are selling, the next I could be chatting to a local councillor. Even designing a photo backdrop for events and writing stories about our youth work programmes. Every day is different and there are always new events that we’re hosting or new projects that are taking place.
How long have you been a member and what made you join?
I have been a member since 2018. When I worked for PLMR Genesis we became members as standard because of the training courses and learning resources the CIPR had available. PLMR Genesis also enters the East Anglia PRide awards most years and receives a lot of accreditations from that.
I wanted to get involved with the East Anglia committee from a personal and professional point of view because continual learning and sharing knowledge are super important to me. You can never know everything; so by meeting new people, sharing that knowledge and attending training courses and workshops ensures you do that.
I have gained so much knowledge, connections and friends through my involvement in the East Anglia committee. Each person volunteers their time to give something back and learn themselves and it’s been an honour to a part of that.
How does the CIPR support your career?
The CIPR has supported my career in many ways. Through the CIPR conferences, through connections I make, through the awards my previous company won, and through the countless white papers, webinars, training courses and podcasts I’ve accessed through the website. All of it has benefited me personally and professionally.
