‘To thrive in public relations, stay curious and keep learning’

In this week’s CIPR member spotlight we meet a public relations practitioner in Kenya who supports research and technical teams with their communication

Name: Ann Waithaka

Job title and company: African Population and Health Research Center

Location: Nairobi, Kenya

Time in PR: 5+ years

What does your current role involve?
As a senior communications officer at the African Population and Health Research Center (APHRC) my role involves supporting research and technical teams to communicate to different audiences. This involves leading strategic communications efforts, developing and implementing impactful campaigns, overseeing digital and media content, and mentoring a team of professionals.

I support cross-departmental collaboration, manage high-level editorial projects, and enhance visibility for research and capacity-building initiatives that advance Africa’s development.

What do you love most about working in public relations?
I love the dynamic nature of public relations – crafting compelling narratives, building meaningful connections, and driving impactful conversations that inspire change and influence decision-making.

What's been the highlight of your career so far?
One major highlight was co-leading the organising of a scientific conference that brought together diverse actors including researchers, funders, policymakers and other stakeholders. Pertinent conversations on capacity-strengthening and the research landscape in Africa took place during the two-day event.

How long have you been a CIPR member and what made you join?
I enrolled for a PR professional diploma in public relations in 2023 and joining the association is motivated by the desire to enhance my strategic communication skills, gain globally recognised credentials and interact with like-minded individuals.

How does the CIPR support your career?
CIPR provides a platform for continuous learning, networking, and staying updated with industry best practices, empowering me to refine strategies and deliver exceptional results in my role.

What's the best piece of career advice you’ve been given?
"Stay curious and keep learning – your ability to adapt and evolve is your greatest asset in communications."
