Botanical infusions, complex mocktails, and zero-proof spirits… here’s our pick of bars across the UK and Ireland offering non-alcoholic drinks: perfect for dry January, or a sober start to the year.

LONDON

Purgatory Bar

Just a short walk from Victoria station, the slinky Purgatory Bar offers a unique, high-end cocktail experience, with a limbo-inspired colour scheme – heavenly blue, infernal red and (none-more) black. 

Enjoy devilishly creative cocktails such as Berried Alive (Everleaf mountain, raspberry, cherry and plum soda), Forbidden Eden (seedlips, apple, lemon, agave, mint), or Popping Paradise (Lyre’s Dark Cane Spirit, passion fruit, vanilla, lychee, pineapple, and, of course, popping candy…)

 

MANCHESTER

Dishoom

Along with its justly celebrated Bombay-style culinary offerings, Dishoom’s alcohol-free drinks menu – aka Teetotal Tipples (“looks like alcohol but does not contain one single drop”) is an elegant marvel to behold.Try the No-Hafta Colada (dragon fruit and papaya), or the Crystal All-Clear Mojito (mint, cardamom and lime, mixed with soda and non-alcoholic aperitivo).

SCOTLAND

Hillhead Bookclub, Glasgow

Cozy and welcoming, Hillhead Bookclub offers an attractive mocktail menu with options such as the Aper0%l spritz, a Virgin Passion, and a No-jito. And if you’re going for total saintliness, wash it down with their vegan full Scottish breakfast, including square ‘sausage’, black pudding, haggis, potato scone, avocado, mushroom, tomato, beans and toast.

Placebo at Leith Arches, Edinburgh 

Soft-launched in May 2024, this very cool alcohol-free pop-up opens on the first Thursday of every month, and features the likes of the fiery, ginger and cinnamon-infused Talonmore, the You + I Kombucha, and InTune’s CBD (cannabidiol) infused range, such as pomegranate and ginger or elderflower and hops.

WALES

Lab 22, Cardiff

Proper mixologists, the tiny but award-winning Lab 22, voted the best bar in the UK at the 2023 British Restaurant Awards, takes its non-acholic offerings very seriously. Says owner Pajtim Tani Hasa “we make every effort to make sure every guest through the door is accommodated accordingly. Because of this, we offer a massive 10 out of 14 signature serves as non-alcoholic options.” Their ‘Light Particles’ include Science & Religion (a tropical combination of coconut water, pineapple juice, tonka & chai cordial, and macadamia bitters) and Country Track Collins (featuring Seedlip Herb, Lurvill Lavender, and ‘foliage’).

IRELAND

Named after the world’s most famous alcohol-free cocktail, Ireland’s first alcohol free-bar, the Virgin Mary calls itself “the world’s first luxury wellbeing bar group dedicated to inspiring people to ‘drink different’”. An incredibly array of mocktails include the aphrodisiac Love Potion No.9 (peach, cardamom, and chamomile – “a flirty heart opener”) and Roses and Silk (“to soothe the soul”).
