PR is a profession... not someone 'just chatting to the media’

In this edition of our CIPR member spotlight series hear from crisis communications expert and regular Influence contributor Amanda Coleman.

Name: Amanda Coleman
Job title and company: Founder, Amanda Coleman Communications
Location: North-west UK
Time in PR: 27 years

What does your current role involve?
I am a crisis communication consultant and run my own consultancy. So everything I do is about dealing with the worst moments in people's and businesses lives. I provide hands on support when something has happened but also training and help to become crisis ready. When I can I do some guest lecturing at universities.

One of the things I most enjoy is developing crisis simulations where people and teams are put to the test in a safe environment. I think people learn so much from feeling like they are living through a crisis.

What do you love most about working in public relations? For me it has always been the positive impact that you can have on people's lives. It might sound a bit fluffy but I really have felt this through the years. We can be part of the solution rather than the problem. If we keep to our ethics and this is needed now more than ever we have a lot that can help through change and uncertainty.

PR also gets involved in so many diverse things from public to private sector, charities, manufacturing, services, emergency response and this is exciting.

What's been the highlight of your career so far?
Setting up the business was one but probably the biggest was having my first book published, Crisis Communication Strategies. I had always wanted to write a book and to be able to do it about a subject I am so passionate about was like a dream come true. The best thing about it now is when people tell me that it has helped them.

How long have you been a member and what made you join?
I joined the CIPR in 2000 after a few years working in PR and realising this was where my future was. I wanted to ensure I was continuing to learn and develop what I did.

How does the CIPR support your career?
The way I receive support has changed over the years. When I was working in-house and achieved the Chartered PR status it helped to give me some credibility and show that I was a professional not just someone chatting to the media. Since I have been running my consultancy and often am working alone it gives me a connection to the wider PR profession. I get to meet people and talk about things that are happening to impact on the profession and to hear other views and perspectives. That is priceless.

Best piece of career advice you’ve been given?
Find out what your are passionate about and make that your focus. If you want to work in a particular sector or in a communication and PR specialism do it. If you enjoy what you do you will never work a day in your life (as the saying goes!).
