Five of the best team bonding company awaydays
From duck-herding to getting a grilling from a Lord Sugar-alike, here are five corporate off-site experiences with a difference…
1. Duck herding
Giving new meaning to getting your ducks in a row, this delightfully daffy activity will see a bona fide shepherd and a highly trained border collie help you guide a gaggle of ducks around an obstacle course. You’ll will need to deliver a beak performance, marshalling the squawking wildfowl through tunnels, around gates, down slides and (eventually) back into their pen. Of course, they’ll be waddling off in all directions, turning this into a true Mission Im-pondible, but that’s where your teamwork and problem-solving skills come in. Totally quackers.

2. The Killing CSI Team Building Experience
Designed by former Scotland Yard detectives, this immersive (and slightly grisly) experience transforms your away-day into a full-blown murder investigation. Donning white lab coats and face masks, you and your colleagues will analyse blood splatter, dust for fingerprints, examine ballistic evidence, inspect dental records and hunt for hair and fibres – all while solving the murder of a fictional CEO. If you’ve ever fantasised about starring on Silent Witness, now’s your chance: the team behind this event advised the BBC crime drama. Just try not to imagine the HR director who dreams up your team-building exercises as the cadaver.

3. The Parmesan Job
This high-octane treasure hunt pays homage to 1960s’ crime caper The Italian Job, with teams solving clues and completing challenges while whizzing around in a fleet of Fiat 500s. You might get sick of the boss doing bad Michael Caine impressions all day, but the event will be lots of fun – apparently the grand finale is a pyrotechnical extravaganza where teams are “only supposed to blow the bloody doors off” to claim some gold. Had a successful 2025 and/or got a sky-high budget? Then you can upgrade the experience by hiring powerboats and helicopter rides.

4. Workplace choir team building
The 60% of British people who find team building experiences “embarrassing or cringe-worthy” (according to one 2022 YouGov survey) will probably be tempted to throw a sickie for this one. If they do, they’ll be missing out on the chance to build camaraderie, develop confidence and communication skills, plus give their pipes a serious workout to The Black Eyed Peas’ I Gotta Feeling. A night out at Lucky Voice karaoke this is not, but performing in a choir with your desk-mates will redefine what it means to be part of a harmonious team.

5. ‘The Rookie’ team building
If you’ve ever watched the BBC’s The Apprentice and thought you could do better than the clueless contestants with their power posing and “I’m a corporate tiger. Grr!” comments, then this is the exercise for you. Lord Sugar is replaced by someone called ‘Lord Sweetener’ (see what they did there?) while the day will see your team power through all the high-stakes tasks of its near-namesake show: think brainstorming ideas, scavenger hunts at local shops, bartering with unsuspecting business-owners, pitching to a panel of ‘moguls’, and a final, sweat-inducing boardroom take-down. The prize? A ‘six-figure salary’ of… £000,000.
