'I believe communication can change the world'

CIPR Scotland’s Young Communicator of the Year tells us about her work with Edinburgh University Students’ Association

Name: Amelia Stokes
Job title and company: Internal communications and PR manager, Edinburgh University Students’ Association
Location: Edinburgh
Time in PR: 10 years

What does your current role involve?
I support our student representatives to deliver their manifesto objectives by advising them on communications strategy and stakeholder management. I also manage press enquiries and statement writing, leading on crisis comms for issues such as global conflict and the housing crisis.

I also run training for student representatives and staff on PR and the media.

What do you love most about working in public relations?
I believe communication can change the world. I am passionate about promoting ethical communications and compassionate leadership, and it’s a joy to use these skills to help people build rewarding relationships.

What's been the highlight of your career so far?
Being named CIPR Scotland’s Young Communicator of the Year (Hamp Hamilton Award, 2024). It was an honour to be selected and recognised for my commitment to ethical and emotionally intelligent communication. I also met some fantastic PR professionals (such as Jenifer Stirton and Sarah Black) who have inspired and guided me on the next steps in my career.

How long have you been a member and what made you join?
Two years. I joined to be part of the CIPR community and work towards my chartership (which I achieved this year, just before my thirtieth!).

How does the CIPR support your career?
Great learning resources and a fantastic mentor/buddy programme. Crispin Thorold (another fantastic communications professional) mentored me before my chartership exam, and his advice was extremely helpful!

Best piece of career advice you’ve been given?
Ask yourself, “does the job you want exist or do you have to create it?” - Sarah Black
