Top PR advice: 'People remember soundbites, not paragraphs'
In this edition we shine the CIPR member spotlight on the managing director of a B2B tech comms agency who has clients in Hollywood and three decades of PR experience to share.
Name: Glenn Matchett
Job title and company: Managing director, Grammatik Agency
Location: London
Time in PR: 30 years
What does your current role involve?
I lead a B2B tech comms team called Grammatik. We’re ranked as a top 50 agency in our space by PR Week and we partner with our clients to add value on both a retained and project basis.
As managing director, I am responsible for all aspects of running the business. I shape the overall focus for our client portfolio, oversee projects and campaigns while supporting senior management to help grow Grammatik’s reach and expand the business.
I thrive in roles that combine hands-on, operational activity with setting and delivering business strategy.
What do you love most about working in public relations?
I love the variety and how the industry is always evolving. We have a focus on technology at Grammatik which is such a fascinating and progressive space. Our clients range from studios creating VFX [visual effects] for Hollywood films to AI tools, game studios and telecoms. Never a dull moment – especially as agency side you have to be able to switch between different clients and their own unique brand and challenges.
What's been the highlight of your career so far?
I was part of team that built a TV business from nothing to a £193m trade sale. During my time there, as well as PR and marketing, I had overall responsibility for the broadcast output of three live TV channels which were on-air for up to 17 hours a day.
How long have you been a CIPR member and what made you join?
I was a relative latecomer to the CIPR and have only been a member for four years. I think being part of an industry body in important as it can be a good source of knowledge and trends as well as helping train my team.
How does the CIPR support your career?
I never want to stop learning in my career. And the CIPR helps support that goal. From a business point of view it helps me attract talent and is a good platform to help my team grow and learn. They also feel invested in which is important.
Best piece of career advice you’ve been given?
Kiss - keep it simple stupid! Clarity cuts through noise. Media wants the hook, not an essay. People remember soundbites, not paragraphs. Simplicity is hard but powerful.
