Which one skills gap will you address this year?

That was one of the questions we asked as part of our annual Qualifications for Communicators Trends Survey. Without giving too much away about the survey, which is due out next month, most students identified digital communications as being the one skills gap they would address in the next 12 months.

The need for digital and social media communications training no doubt has a lot to do with the fact that more of us working in communications are undertaking digital and social media tasks as part of our jobs. According to the recent PR Census carried out by the PRCA and PRWeek, almost two thirds of the PR people surveyed cited digital as being one of their duties.

The PR Census also puts digital top of the list of tasks that have increased in importance over the past two years, and top of the chart of tasks likely to increase in importance in the next two years.

Given the way things are now and look to be moving, digital and social media is rapidly becoming a necessary core skill for communicators. We need to get to grips with it so that we know how to use it strategically alongside other tools in our toolkit.

With this in mind, what one skills gap will you address this year?

And finally….a big thank you …    We received more than 100 responses from past and present students to this year’s Trends Survey, providing us with some interesting findings. Thanks to everyone who completed the survey and helped to raise money for Crisis. (We donated £1 for every response and added this to what we would have spent on corporate gifts and Christmas cards, making our total donation £517.)  Look out for the full results of our survey coming soon.
