Public Relations Plays a Key Role in CPR Awareness

By James Knight.

Despite some great matches, one event on the pitch has overshadowed the others at Euro 2020 – Denmark’s Christian Eriksen collapsing during their opening game with Finland.

Great work from the emergency team on hand saved his life, and the from the players, who formed a protective screen around him. It was later revealed he had suffered a heart attack.

The scene was reminiscent of Fabric Muamba, who, in 2012, collapsed at Spurs’ ground while playing for Bolton. He also had a heart attack but fortunately that day a cardiologist was in the crowd and able to assist the club doctors.

We have come along way since then, with more training and facilities and staff available, though not at amateur level.

The question I ask the public is do they know how to administer CPR and do you know where there is a Defibrillators available?

We need more people trained in CPR. I have asked a number of people about cost and £180 seems to be the average fee to learn. I know you can follow the web instructions, this is fine for cooperate training not individuals. St John Ambulance Training is an excellent organisation that runs recognised courses where you know what you are going to get professionally trained people to advise and help.

More training should be free.

It would a great service if every school included CPR for their older pupils along with awareness of the situation and what to do.

Would you know how to implement CPR in the street or where defibrillators could be found? I rest my case.

We need a big PR campaign being lead by politicians and sports stars to make the public aware.

Ex-England manager Glenn Hoddle was at BT studios in London when he suddenly collapsed. Quick thinking by one of the technical team, Simon Daniels, who knew CPR, saved his life until he could be  taken to Barts, one of the foremost leading cardiology hospitals in London.

I have AF Fast Heart Rate, mine was discovered after collapsing in London in 2009, I am on medication and lucky enough to be with one of the best consultants in Britain. My experience shows how we need a screening programme.
